P3: Best UX (due April 9)
This is old content
Andrew is not currently teaching IAT-438. This material is left online for reference only.
Introduction
Having worked through a couple of projects, this project has you working on either clientele-provided problems or problems of your own choosing. In addition to new problems to tackle you will integrate more ethics, systems and/or futures thinking into a more self-defined design process. Final solutions will be a presentation and high-fidelity prototype (physical or digital) which demonstrates a solution appropriate to the context of the brief.
This project begins individually, but can conclude in groups of 3-4 students.
P3: Best UX is worth 40% of your final grade.
Proposing a brief
If you are not interested in working on the briefs linked to this project, please email Andrew before March 19 to discuss an alternative project focus. As part of discussing an alternative project please be prepared to answer:
- What is the context?
- What is the challenge?
- Who is it for?
- What considerations may there be?
Weekly plan
For this project you are planning out your own deliverables with some caveats. You will deliver your 'plan' for deliverables to class on March 19.
Constraints
The constraints below form the 'non-negotiables' for the project:
- You must complete an individual deliverable that reports on research related to the project.
- The individual deliverable must be worth at least 10 points (of the 40 total available).
- You must complete a final presentation that reports on your proposed direction in response to the brief.
- The final presentation must be worth at least 10 points (of the 40 total available).
- At your discretion you must distribute the additional 20 points (of the 40 total available) between the report and final presentation.
- If forming a group for the final presentation, there will be a maximum of 4 members per group.
- The report is due before class on April 9, and the final presentation will be presented in-class the same day.
- The report and final presentation will be graded using the rubric.
Writing the plan
Please assemble a document that details the following items and print it out to bring to class on March 19:
- Your name.
- Your chosen brief.
- What you are aiming to complete in each week of the project.
- When would external critique be most useful, and what would you like to discuss?
- What your individual deliverable reporting on research will cover, and what form this individual deliverable will take (PDF report, in-person presentation, video presentation, etc).
- What is the word count for the report? (You may provide a total or per-section value)
- How many additional points (of 20) are you assigning to the individual deliverable?
- If you are likely to work in a group for the final project.
- How long you would like for your final presentation for the project.
- How many points remain (of the 20) to assign to the final presentation.
- Any lingering questions or concerns with the project more broadly.
I will follow-up with any individuals for whom I have a concern with their plan on March 20 (Friday) to discuss anything that needs clarification or addressing.
Grading rubric
Linked is the rubric for both the report and final presentation for this project.
Final submission requirements (April 9)
Both pieces are due to Canvas before your April 9 class.
Please make sure double-check all your submitted URLs to ensure they can be opened. We want to avoid late or problematic submission penalties whenever possible.
