Is it an insight?
Lecture outline
How do we derive meaning from research. Lecture slides will be made available on the day of the lecture.
External feedback
In next week's class I will have a variety of folks available online for team feedback sessions. I recommend using these sessions as a 'pilot' for your presentation that will be provided to the class in the later half.
Questions?
How often do I need to post-it??
Formalizing your research into writing matters.
Building a research wall
In groups of 3-5, please assemble all the things you have learned thus far into a collection of post-its on a wall. Make sure your writing and the statement are clear and 'complete'; I should understand this without explanation.
You have 10 minutes.
Review the 'learnings'
Take a couple minutes to just read the items that individuals have put up on the wall.
You have 5 minutes.
Deriving insights
Translating things you have found into an 'insight' involves building connections in the data. An insight should provide an actionable finding supported by data.
Deriving insights is hard.
Building affinities
Here we are trying to find emergent themes in the data. As part of this we typically:
- Read/understand the data.
- Tag anything of interest.
- Group things into categories.
- Refine categories.
Tag things of interest
Take a moment to individually take a look again at what you have found. Flag post-its that are of interest to you with a dot on the post-it.
You have 5 minutes.
Affinities
Now for the hard part. As a group try to work on building at least one group of related or connected post-its:
- Discuss pattern(s) you are seeing.
- Move around post-its to suggest groupings or associations.
You have 10 minutes.
Defining the insight
Now for the harder part. Defining the insight in a concise and actionable way. To do so we should ensure we are:
- Using multiple data points to support the insight.
- Not being too vague; makes it hard to take a specific action.
- Not being too specific; may mean there is little to action.
- Keeping it 'realistic' and connected to the data.
- Striving for an insight not a solution.
Insight mad-libs
To help with starting on deriving insights, I have some possible structures:
- person/character/role activity/action/situation because aim/need/outcome but restriction/obstacle/friction.
- When context, persons feel emotion, so they behaviour.
- persons want to action because motivation.
- When persons encounter problem they wish to want/need/desire.
- If condition, then outcome because reason.
Derive an insight
Please aim to derive one insight from your materials. Be prepared to have one of your group members present in under two minutes:
- Which brief you are working on.
- The insight.
- Three points of data that support the insight.
You have 5 minutes.
Questions?
Listening
Interview
Your team will be running an interview in a small office around a rectangular table. Please set up your positioning of the:
- Interviewer
- Note taker
- Participant
Please use post-its to indicate who is who. You have 5 minutes.
Capture
One of your team members thinks capturing the interview would be useful. Please decide:
- Which method would you use? (Photo, audio, video)
- Why would you use that method?
- How would you ask for consent?
- Where would you position the device?
Please use a post-it to indicate where the device is. You have 5 minutes.
Withdraw
Your participant has decided to suddenly withdraw from participating in the interview, what do you do?
Be prepared to share your answer. You have 2 minutes.
Listening
Group formation
For the project you are permitted to form into groups of 3-5 students (this differs slightly from the project outline). Before you leave today I will need to know:
- Your group's name
- Who is in your group
Please come to the front so I may add you to groups on Canvas.
You have 10 minutes.
What to discuss?
We will be shortly completing our check-ins for P1, with each group receiving 5 minutes.
Please discuss what items are most pressing for you to discuss.
You have 5 minutes.
Check-in
The remainder of our class time is for the following:
- Completing the in-class activity.
- Final rubric review.
- Project check-in (5 minutes per group).
You have 5 minutes.
Break time!
Please return for class in 10 minutes
